Continuing Our Mission in San Diego!

The mission of the American Society for Precision Engineering is to advance the arts, sciences, and technology of precision engineering, to promote its dissemination through education and training, and to promote its use by science and industry. Precision Engineering is a discipline encompassing the design, development and measurement of and for high-accuracy components. By extension, the field also includes the design of systems in which high dimensional accuracy is a central concern, as well as the design of machine tools and measuring machines to accomplish the necessary manufacture and measurement.

ASPE’s 40th Annual Meeting will be at the Omni San Diego in the heart of Downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego has an ideal climate with average daytime temperatures of 72 degrees and plenty of sunshine. It seems as if there is an infinite amount of things to do and see in San Diego, so be sure to start planning your visit to San Diego and the 40th ASPE Annual Meeting.

ASPE has a proactive and conscious commitment to determinism and expertise in precision engineering. For this 40th Annual Meeting, we will feature a Special Opening Session offering senior perspectives on how these fundamental concepts have proven invaluable.

Special Opening Session

  1. John S. Taylor
Introduction: Perspective on Determinism and Precision Engineering
  2. Alexander Slocum
Determinism as a Catalyst for Creative, Effective Precision Design
  3. Stuart T. Smith
Instrumentation and Mechanisms: Finding the Ceiling
  4. Jelm Franse
The Best Recipe for Developing Mechatronic Systems with World-Class Performance
  5. Jeffrey W. Roblee & Mark Stocker
Applying the Principles of Precision Engineering to Enhance the Repeatability of Machine Tools
  6. Brigid A. Mullany
Determinism in Manufacturing: A Surface Scan Can Reveal a Multitude
  7. Edward P. Morse
    Determinism and Documentary Standards

Call For Papers

We are soliciting papers in the following areas:

  • Controls and Mechatronics
  • Metrology Systems & Surface Characterization
  • Precision Design
  • Precision Manufacturing
  • Micro-Nano Technologies
  • Applications of Precision Eng. & Measurement Science

Relevance to Precision Engineering
It is a great benefit for the audience – and the conference organizers – if authors and speakers can explain how their work either enhances or makes use of precision engineering principles. For example, how does the work embrace any or all of the pillars of determinism – predictability of error sources from first principles, repeatability, quantifiability, and measurability? How have you utilized or furthered our key tools of precision engineering, including error budgets, characterization of measurement uncertainty, metrology of workpieces and system performance, traceability, and control algorithms for optimizing disturbance rejection. Much of our engineering focus is on building or measuring things – can you provide insight on functional specifications or “How good is good enough?” Do you distinguish between errors of accuracy (bias) and repeatability (precision)? As you prepare your abstract or presentation, please let us know how your work considers these topics and brings value to our precision engineering community.

Submit Extended Abstract

Extended abstracts are 4-6 pages for inclusion in the published conference proceedings made available to all attendees.

Awards and Scholarships
ASPE encourages students who have not been awarded any scholarship from ASPE in the past to apply for Student Scholarships. The scholarships will offset the conference fees, and depending on the scholarship, will offset travel costs with a financial award. Applications are due by Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The College of Fellows recognizes and honors exceptional members of the Society who have made outstanding contributions to the art and practice of Precision Engineering. Thank you for your nominations.

The Early Career Award recognizes important technical contributions from ASPE members who are in the early stages of their careers. Thank you for your nominations.

Student Challenge
ASPE is proud to host the popular and well-received Annual Student Challenge this year in San Diego, see the student challenge page for information on team registration.
