The Dutch Approach to High Performance Motion Control

Over a period of more than 40 years Dutch companies as Philips Electronics, ASML, FEI, OCE and many others have developed a successful approach to the Design and Development of Mechatronic solutions for High Precision Motion. Starting with consumer products as Optical Disc Drives and leading to advanced solutions for nanometer positioning in combination with accelerations of more than 10g’s used in the Lithography tools, a continuous attention to development of new industrial technology delivered successful results.

In this unique tutorial two of the key players in this field, Maarten Steinbuch and Adrian Rankers, will present the main lessons learned in the past and will indicate where scientific developments may lead in the near future. Rankers will focus on integrated methods for design of dynamic mechanical systems and the associated feedback control. Steinbuch will highlight advanced feedforward solutions used in the industrial systems today. In addition he will show which of the advanced approaches in learning feedforward as well as repetitive control are being researched and are promising for further technological improvements.

We think that this tutorial will give a solid introduction to the Topical Meeting and will enable the attendants to find fruitful ways to improve their approach to understanding many aspects of High Precision Motion Systems.
