The understanding and control of surface texture is essential to the survival of many industries.  However, in most of these industries, surfaces are not well understood.  In this tutorial we will demystify the world of surface texture through case studies, imagery and live analysis of many different surfaces representing many different surface functions.

The afternoon session will build on the fundamentals from the morning and will be more topical in nature.  We will go deeper into the analysis of surface – exploring and demonstrating some of the more advanced tools such as:

• Robust Filtering (filters can fool you)
  • Applications in Plateau Honing, ceramics, powdered metal
• Morphological Filtering (detecting things that go bump in the night)
  • Applications in sealing, cosmetic surfaces and stress control
• Stratified Surface Analysis (smooth on top rough underneath)
  • Material Ratio and Material Probability Analysis
• Advanced Areal Analyses (if I can see it, I can quantify it)
  • Feature Detection/Segmentation
  • Surface Directionality
