Dr. Liam G. Connolly
National Institute of Standards and Technology

Dr. Liam G. Connolly is a National Research Council postdoctoral associate in the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division at NIST where he investigates integrated cavity optomechanics for quantum networking and frequency comb spectroscopy approaches for high-speed interrogation of micro-scale mechanical resonators.

Liam has been a member of ASPE for eight years where he has held positions on the Micro and Nano Technologies Technical Leadership Committee for seven years and the Student Challenge Committee for the last five years. He helped organize two topical meetings and is also a member of the organizing committee for the 2024 Annual Meeting in Houston.

Liam’s interest in precision engineering began while he was finishing his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University using a beamline at the Advanced Light Source at LBNL. As a result of this exposure to the world of precision engineering, he chose to join the research group of Prof. Michael Cullinan at The University of Texas at Austin in 2016 through an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.

Liam was able to attend the 2017 ASPE Annual Meeting via the award of a student scholarship and from that point on, precision engineering became both a hobby and a professional obsession, aided in large part by the warm and welcoming atmosphere at ASPE.

In addition to serving the Society that has so positively influenced Liam’s career in precision engineering, his vision as the Nominating Committee Chair is to aid in the growth of the Xociety, and particularly ASPE leadership, to ensure that voices from a plethora of both backgrounds and areas of expertise are heard and valued as ASPE continues to expand its ranks to tackle the great engineering challenges of our time.
