Advancing Precision in Additive Manufacturing

This topical meeting focused on additive manufacturing began in 2014 as Dimensional Accuracy and Surface Finish in Additive Manufacturing, organized by ASPE and hosted in Berkeley, California. In 2017, ASPE’s sister society, euspen, joined as a co-organizing society and the meeting was hosted in Leuven, Belgium. The meeting is now known as Advancing Precision in Additive Manufacturing and is hosted annually, alternating between the U.S. and Europe.

Each of the links in the holistic AM process chain contributes to the predictability and repeatability of the final product. Conversely, a lack of understanding within any of the links adds risk to achieving necessary precision and determinism. This topical conference offers a unique opportunity to explore how topics spanning design, process planning, machine control, and metrology are all essential linkages in the AM process chain.

This year’s meeting will be hosted by Jaime Berez, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. UNC Charlotte is home to a long standing reputation of excellence in manufacturing and metrology research, much of it connected to the University’s Center for Precision Metrology. Additionally, the Charlotte region is home to many commercial businesses in the manufacturing, motorsports, aerospace, energy, and biomedical sectors including several that are highly focused on additive manufacturing. Attendees can expect speakers from these organizations as well as tours of UNC Charlotte and local facilities. This will include tours of UNC Charlotte’s Center for Precision Metrology and the NASCAR Research and Development Center, where attendees will be able to view NASCAR’s rapid prototyping facility and their full-car Optical Scanning System (OSS), a metrology system used trackside to inspect race vehicle bodies for rules compliance. More details will be announced at a later date.

The Charlotte region is a wonderful place to visit, with a large international airport, a local train system, a well known craft beer scene, and recreational activities such as the US National Whitewater Center, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, multiple professional sports teams, and numerous other tourist attractions. Charlotte is within a two hour drive of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and under a 4 hour drive from coastal regions such as Charleston, SC, and Wilmington, NC. We hope to see you in Charlotte this Summer!

Call for Papers

Papers addressing the following topics are solicited. A more detailed list of topics can be found in the official meeting call-for-papers.

  • Dimensional accuracy and surface finish in AM
  • Metrology for AM
  • Design for manufacturing and precision applications
  • AM machines and process control
  • Integrating AM into a holistic manufacturing process
  • Process physics, simulation, and optimization

This year, a new special session entitled Imprecision In Additive Manufacturing: Sharing Oddities and Failures to Move Technology Forward, will be held. Topics for this special session will be solicited from authors who submit an abstract for the technical session. No formal abstracts or papers will be required for this special session. More details will be released after April 15th.

Awards
The meeting co-chairs are pleased to inform potential attendees that awards for (1) Best Paper, (2) Best Oral Presentation, and (3) Best Poster will be granted at the 2026 meeting. Awards are conditional upon the registration and attendance of at least one author/presenter. All accepted papers will be eligible for the Best Paper award. All oral or poster presentations with an accompanying accepted paper will be eligible for the Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster awards. Awards will be adjudicated by the organizing committee. Invited speakers are not eligible for any awards.

Instructions for Short Abstract Preparation and Submission

Short abstracts should be 200-300 words in length. Short abstracts should be submitted using this template AND then converted to a PDF. Up to one figure may be included at the author’s discretion.

Upload the short abstract at this link: (TBA)

Instructions for Full Paper Preparation and Submission

Full papers of approximately 2-4 pages will be required for all accepted abstracts and should use this template AND then converted to a PDF. E-mail extended abstracts to executive@aspe.net and include the abstract number in the subject line. (You will receive an abstract number when you submit your short abstract).

Proceedings
Accepted papers will be published in a compiled proceedings document that is given to meeting attendees and hosted on the ASPE website for access by ASPE members. ASPE also permits authors to post their own papers as extracted from the published proceedings to open repositories, e.g., ResearchGate, arxiv, etc.

Registration and Meeting Details

Registration fees will be posted by April 15th.
