Siemens Gas Turbine Factory and Okuma America

9:00 AM – 11:30 AM:  Siemens Gas Turbine Factory
Siemens in Charlotte is one of the lead facilities in the company’s global manufacturing network and serves as the worldwide hub for Siemens 60 Hz large power generating equipment. Opened in 1969, the facility has manufactured and serviced generators and steam turbines for the power generation market for decades. In November 2011, the facility celebrated the opening of a new expansion, adding gas turbine production and service capabilities. The new Gas Turbine facility was designed based on LEAN manufacturing principles and is certified to U.S. LEED Gold green building standards. With its current workforce of 1,600 and more than one million square feet of space under roof, Siemens Energy in Charlotte has become one of the largest manufacturers in the city and also one of the largest among the 250+ Energy companies based in Charlotte. Tour participants will see the manufacturing and servicing of large gas turbines, large steam turbines, and generators. The tour will also cover various aspects of the Siemens Charlotte operation, including its focus on lean manufacturing concepts, workforce development, and more. Tour participation is subject to review by Siemens Energy, Inc.
Appropriate Attire: Pants, sleeved shirt. For the manufacturing facility tour: Steel-toed or hard-soled flat, closed shoes or boots. For the manufacturing facility tour, all participants must be fully mobile (no casts, crutches, canes, etc.) in the event of an emergency. The site can provide safety glasses.
Appropriate Identification:  All visitors must be pre-registered for site visitor compliance policies, which will be handled by ASPE once you register for the tour during conference registration. In accordance with United States Border Patrol and the Siemens’ Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism Policy, all Visitors, must present a United States issued valid driver’s license or identification card and be positively identified by Siemens Security personnel. International Passports are the only form of non-United States identification approved in accordance with this policy. Foreign Driver’s Licenses are not accepted.  All visitors are to be escorted by their Siemens Charlotte host at all times.

11:30 AM – 12:30 AM Lunch

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM Okuma America
Okuma America is known for its longtime manufacture of CNC lathes, but its product line also includes vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, double-column machining centers, multitasking CNC machines, 5-axis CNC machines, grinders, and wheel machines. You will get a chance to see a variety of tools – lathes, mills and grinders of all sizes, and machine tools, machine shop metal cutting equipment.

Located about 20 minutes from The Westin Charlotte in Concord, North Carolina, the Carl Zeiss Technology Center just had its grand opening on June 6.  The Technology Center has a range of CMM machines, CT system, surface inspection, and Microscopy systems. Each of the following stations will include a short presentation and a short demonstration or hands-on activity.

  • Filters and Outliers and the Scanning CMM (in CMM Training Center with four CMMs)
  • Metrotomography (at Metrotom 1500)
  • Microscopy (at SmartZoom and SmartProof)
  • Multi Sensor CMMs with Tactile Scanning, Camera, and CFS White Light  (at O-Inspect 543)
