MM5-Introduction to Laser Micro Machining

The objective of this tutorial is to provide an introduction to the various technologies and principles contained within laser micro-machining. As one may infer from the name, laser micro-machining requires the application of precision engineering principles combined with those of the physics of light. The target audience consists of those who are familiar with precision engineering but may have had limited exposure to laser micro-machining; as well as for those that may have a theoretical background in optics or lasers but are seeking an applied perspective.  Theory of the corresponding technologies will be discussed as necessary to motivate the application of precision laser processes.

This course will begin with an overview of the various types of laser micro-machining and the technologies employed within. A few of these topics include lasers, laser optics, beam manipulation devices (galvanometer scanners and fixed cutting heads), and general automation devices. Following this, the interaction of these various components will be considered, especially for the purpose of how a laser micro-machining system is properly designed and constructed. Upon the realization of a laser micro-machining system, the applied practice of developing processes and effectively utilizing the machine will be discussed. The realization of said machine will be discussed up to the point that a process would be handed over to a manufacturing team to harden for production readiness.

At the conclusion of this course, the attendees should understand general laser and optical technologies, how these technologies are combined to produce precision laser machines, and finally how these machines are used to produce precision components in industry.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn about the following:

  1. An overview of laser micro-machining technology and their underlying principles. A few of these topics include lasers, laser optics, beam manipulation devices (galvanometer scanners and fixed cutting heads), and general automation devices.
  2. Important considerations for laser micro-processing machines including but not limited to, general machine design principles, optical beam path considerations, alignment techniques, and calibration.
  3. Laser micro-processing fundamentals applied to real applications and parts that have been produced on a variety of machines.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of precision engineering principles.

Eric Belski is Aerotech’s laser applications laboratory manager, leading the development of advanced precision automation and laser machining applications. Eric collaborates with laser technologists and researchers to address customers’ most challenging laser applications. He has presented on precision laser machining applications at a variety of laser processing conferences and authored articles on the intersection of precision machine design and laser processing. He has 10+ years of professional  experience in precision motion control and robotics, holding roles in mechatronics research, systems engineering and robotic system controls. Eric earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
