Dr. Gregory W. Vogl
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Greg Vogl is a researcher and project leader at NIST. Currently, he leads the Augmented Intelligence for Manufacturing Systems project, which seeks to develop solutions via metrology and AI for manufacturing systems. His path to ASPE is a bit different than others, but ASPE is full of unique people with their own experiences to share, which is an aspect of ASPE that is highly valued. Greg received his B.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics and M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech, with a focus on nonlinear dynamics. He never attended ASPE as a graduate student but then began to get his hands dirty in a cleanroom with metrological work as an NRC postdoc at NIST in 2007 under the advisement of Jon Pratt.
Greg then joined the Production Systems Group at NIST and began contributing to machine tool standards and vibration metrology through ASME and ISO. Greg was elected in 2023 as an Associate Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) and is the recipient of a NIST Engineering Laboratory Mentoring Award, NIST Colleagues’ Choice Award, and NIST Engineering Laboratory Outstanding Publication Award. In 2020 and 2022, he co-led the ASPE tutorial on High-Precision Single-Axis Linear Positioning Systems with Steve Ludwick, Axel Grabowski, and Jimmie Miller.
As a relatively new member of ASPE, Greg has enjoyed interacting with the ASPE community at the Annual Meetings and in the development of precision-related standards. He is honored to be nominated for the Nominating Committee Chair-Elect position and hopes to help the Society to increase its unique variety of engineers and scientists in leadership roles.
