This tutorial provides a detailed overview of the state of the art in air bearings. It starts by history, utility and place of gas bearings in modern technology. A large part is devoted to modelling  of gas lubricating films and there basic characteristics. Sub-problems are treated separately: -fluid entrance to the gap; – inertia effects; – dynamics behavior; – thermal issues and management; – active bearings and dynamic compensation. Although emphasis is placed on flat aerostatic bearings and on (high-speed) journal bearings, other types of bearing are overviewed: foil bearings; porous bearings; tilting-pad bearings; hanging bearings; … Finally, application examples will be presented and discussed throughout the tutorial within the context of the different bearing types and design issues.
