Tour 1: Portland City Sights Tour
Monday 10/20/08
Cost: $65

Tour of Portland Schedule:
10AM - Pick up from the Marriott Hotel
10:15 -10:30 AM – Drive to the Pittock Mansion
10:30 -11:00 AM – Pittock

Mansion
The first stop on the tour will be the historic Pittock Mansion. This house has been a landmark in Portland since it was built in 1909 for The Oregonian newspaper publisher at the time Henry Pittock and his wife Georgiana. This colossal house sits on 46 acres in west Portland and has gorgeous panoramic views of the city. Henry and Georgiana Pittock were major pioneers in the development of Portland in the late 19th century, as Pittock is known as turning The Oregonian into the major publication it is today and his wife Georgiana was one of the founders of the Portland Rose Festival. Currently the city of Portland’s Bureau of Parks and Recreation own the mansion, as the city viewed it as a remarkable attraction in the city.

11:10 AM – Head to Washington Park
11:15 -11:45 AM – Washington Park

Washington Park
Stop and stretch your legs at Washington Park where you have a clear view of beautiful Mt. Hood. This nearly 130-acre park is the home of Portland’s famous International Rose Test Garden, Japanese Garden, and the Oregon Zoo. There is no better way to see Portland’s flora and fauna than from this one beautiful location.

11:45 -12:00 PM – Head to the Pearl District
12:00-2:00 PM – Lunch and free time in the Pearl District

Lunch and the Pearl District
Portland’s most recent neighborhood transformation is located right in the heart of downtown. Since the late 1990’s Portland has transformed this area from warehouses and railroad yards to a trendy neighborhood blossoming with art galleries and high-rise condos. Here you will find the renowned Powell’s City of Books, as well as famous breweries that can only be found in the Brewery Blocks of Portland. This area continues to grow as boutiques, galleries, theaters and restaurants fight for space in this district.

2:15 -3:00 PM – Tour of downtown Portland including Old Town/Chinatown, Waterfront Park, and the Park Blocks

Downtown Portland
Finally we’ll end the day with a tour of Portland’s inner downtown area. Old Town/Chinatown is the original heart of the city, where now you can find the Portland Saturday Market and curious Shanghai Tunnels. The donut shop that is ever growing in popularity and has been featured on many national cooking and travel shows can also be found here; Voodoo Doughnuts has been calling Old Town home since 2003. Other points of interest on this tour will include Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Park Blocks, and the Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

3:00 PM – Return to the Marriott Hotel


Tour 2: Industrial Tour
CoorsTek - Oregon Operations and FEI Company
Cost: $45 (including box lunch)

CoorsTek, Oregon Operations produces some of the largest ceramic structures available anywhere.
This facility serves the metrology, semiconductor, flat panel, optics, armor and paper industries with alumina and alpha grade silicon carbide. Capabilities include 5 meter class guide ways and meter class optics for telescope components, image sensors, surveillance systems or for directed energy applications. The Oregon operation has state of the art forming, sintering, grinding, lapping and precision metrology capabilities to make guide ways, lightweight mirrors and optical structures.FEI Company specializes in electron optics and focused ion beam technologies and imaging for three-dimensional characterization, analysis and modification of materials and structures with resolution down to the sub-Ångström level.

The visit to FEI will include a one-and-a-half hour tour of the Portland NanoPorts product showroom, where participants will be shown “live thrill rides” of four of their microscopes and the type of applications of which each is capable. They will be the TEM, Small Dual Beam, Quanta SEM, and the desktop SEM Phenom.


Friday, October 24. Departure time is 8:00 a.m., return to the hotel at approximately between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., depending on airport drop-offs. Tour participation is limited; please register early.

NOTE: If you wish to be dropped off at Portland International Airport on the way back, please notify the ASPE office when you register for the tour. Airport drop-off will not be automatic, but based on sufficient interest.
