Machine Tool Metrology and American Metrology Standards
Robert J. Hocken, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Modern machine tools are complex electro-mechanical systems and the thorough testing of their performance reflects this complexity. This tutorial will cover the current state-of-the-art in machine tool metrology as it applies to Machining Centers and Lathes. Technical topics will include tests for environmental effects, parametric testing, compliance testing, spindle errors, contouring performance, and cutting performance. Wherever possible, concepts will be illustrated using examples from actual machine tools. Material primarily comes from two national standards, ASME B5.54 "Methods for the performance evaluation of CNC Machining Centers", 2005 and the B5.57, "Methods for the Performance Evaluation of CNC Lathes and Turning Centers", 1998.
